May 4th was a big night for fashion. The Met Gala 2026 brought out all the drama, gorgeous outfits, and creativity, exactly what the internet was looking for. According to NewzPop, this year, the theme was “Costume Art” in conjunction with the new Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The idea? Fashion is art. Easy to write on paper but complicated on the Red carpet.
Beyoncé co-chaired the night with none other than Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. That lineup alone told you this wasn’t going to be a boring evening.
Were the looks that Beyoncé wore that night the most ambitious?

Short answer: yes. Beyoncé, in a skeletal Olivier Rousteing gown with a diamond necklace, was no short of a gothic fever dream. The looks seemed to be the most expensive and deliberate scale possible. She was not only a co-chair but also showed up at this event. She set the tone for the entire thing.
How did Rihanna close the Met Gala 2026 red carpet?

Rihanna ended her evening with a Maison Margiela Gold all-monogram FW25 Couture outfit, comprised of silk and metal wiring. The structure was of an architectural nature. The finish was spectacular. If fashion is art, then Rihanna’s was the last brushstroke.
Which looks actually took the “costume art” theme seriously?
A few celebrities took the plunge into the short at the Met Gala 2026.

Sabrina Carpenter wore a Dior gown made from film strips of the 1954 film Sabrina. This is a film named after her, and the personal context was made for an art reference. It’s not simply a disguise. That’s storytelling.

In a Prada outfit, Hunter Schafer embodied the art of the Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt. The gold patterns, the layering and the symbolism. She has proven she has range, but Euphoria fans weren’t surprised.

Kim Kardashian took a wide left. She commissioned British pop artist Allen Jones to make her a custom fibreglass breastplate. Sculptural and Provocative. It’s one of her most artistic outfits.

The outfit for SZA’s Bode was 100% eBay! Recycled, yes, but brought together with couture-level craft. It’s been a silent ambassador for sustainability – without calling for a press release.
Which was the most eye-catching appearance of the evening?
Not all looks were conceptual at the Met Gala 2026. They were all concerned with a single thing; visual impact.

Naomi Osaka wore a Robert Wun gown with puffed sleeves, red feathers, a high neckline and a wide-brimmed hat with red leather gloves. All the elements matched. It’s the kind of look that a photographer wants.

Hailey Bieber was seen in a gold, blue sculpted Saint Laurent gown. The reference to the bodice was to a real Saint Laurent work collaboration. Clean, striking, intentional. No unnecessary additions.

Tyla was seen clad in aquamarine sheer Valentino fabric with plunging cut-outs. The big, brave resolve proved to be a great success.

Katy Perry left the world in suspense. She was dressed in a white gown and blacked out behind a silver chrome mesh face covering.
Why is the Met Gala 2026 different this year?
The theme “Costume Art” gave celebrities great freedom to come up with their ideas and be creative. A few of these, for example, alluded to paintings. Some other people brought the idea of sustainability. Others made an emotional choice from their personal experiences.
When it comes to purpose, clothes speak louder than words. In the case of the Met Gala 2026, that’s exactly what it did.
